I grew up with Michael Jackson and The Jackson 5, saw the "Victory" tour, and associate a good many of my High School memories with the 'Thriller' album, but he's totally whack and I don't even look at him in the same light I once did. Same for Tom Cruise. When I witnessed his totally irrational appearance on Oprah that was the beginning of the end for me. I can't even watch him in movies I once loved. I think with him it's more his pompous arrogant attitude that turns me off. Nice post :) posted by: PastorDave (reply) post date: 01.08.08 (6:48 pm) I think you make a good point- an artist should be judged by his work, not his personal life. Tom Cruise seems to behave rather strangely, especially in some of the interviews on television. However, there is no denying that he has done some good work. Personally, I really like A Few Good Men, and Minority Report. And Michael Jackson? Notoriety and strangeness are important parts of his business. Unfortunately, he seems not to know when to quit. I'm not nearly as knowledgeable of his work as yourself. But I do remember his heyday- the sequinned glove, the zombie video, the moonwalk. Great performer. posted by: animadversion (reply) post date: 01.09.08 (5:35 pm) a lot of it is psychological. like with michael jackson, obviously there was some abuse in his childhood. with tom cruise,i really don't have much of an opinion on him.great blog entry. posted by: auntconi (reply) post date: 03.09.08 (9:23 pm) As usual, a bit late, but always a good read ~ thanks. I like most of the Cruise films, but his attitude is going to hurt him. My favorites are Top Gun (love the airplane scenes ~ my 1st hubby was in the Air Force) and A Few Good Men is sooo good! Oh, almost forgot, Rainman, too! Michael Jackson had some fabulous music; I remember my son listening to many of the songs and some I liked, others not so much ~ but that is the way it is with a lot of arttists. However, I am so disappointed with how he has behaved 'in real life' if you can call it that for him. Keep up the good work! posted by: OldSchool (reply) post date: 11.26.08 (7:59 am) **UPDATE** Add a new film to the Tom Cruise list. His portrayal of a fat, balding movie mogul "Les Grossman" in the 2008 film Tropic Thunder is FANTASTIC. Since he is playing against type it makes it that much more entertaining. Proves that Cruise does not take himself so seriously and really his performance helps make the movie. I would put this performance in the top half of my list for sure. It is worth seeing this movie just to see Cruise's character (and Downey Jr. is pretty impressive as well). |
