My favorite episode was their take on "The Taming Of The Shrew" - one of my favorites because of how it closes when they talk about how Kate never needed to be tamed, only to be loved. posted by: surrogate (reply) post date: 02.16.08 (11:02 pm) I'm thinking this is a very age-sensitive list. I would've had some great comedy themes from the sixties.... Gilligan's Isle, Pettycoat Junction, Green Acres, The Beverly Hillbillies - Maybe none of these were great, but as was the style then, they all told the premise of the show real well, as did many on your list I noticed. Oh man, Mannix? Branded? and one that would have been on my list even though there weren't lyrics, Mission Impossible. posted by: SupremeAnna (reply) post date: 02.17.08 (2:28 am) Perfect Strangers! I used to love that theme song. I think the best theme songs are from before the 80s - Gilligan's Island, The Addams Family, Beverly Hillbillies (which I never watched but could sing the song to!) and yes, I agree, I Dream of Jeannie. I used to dance to that all the time as a toddler, lol. Thanks for the list, I like to see I'm not the only one who's a TV baby. posted by: OldSchool (reply) post date: 02.17.08 (7:55 am) Reply to: surrogate Yes, it probably depends greatly on the shows you watched growing up. I do agree the older shows put effort into making the theme song an intro to the premise of the show. They were very catchy and creative. I know the words to most of those songs or can identify them in just a few notes. I found 2 things very interesting to me as I started working on this. First, how quickly memories and emotions can come back just from hearing a TV theme song. Second, how most shows today do not seem to put much effort into making truly great theme songs anymore. I don't disagree that the songs that both you and Anna commented about are not some of the best, but just not my absolute favorites. Thanks for reading and hoped you enjoyed it. posted by: OldSchool (reply) post date: 02.17.08 (7:57 am) Reply to: SupremeAnna Hi Anna, I agree that many of the shows you listed have great theme songs because they were used more to introduce the viewer to the premise of the show. I too know them all by heart and recognize them within just a few notes. I was trying to list my favorites, so that is why many of those were not in the top 15. Thanks so much for reading and I hoped you enjoyed it. posted by: OldSchool (reply) post date: 02.17.08 (8:00 am) Reply to: emerging Hi E, Moonlighting was a very under-rated show. It was very well written and had an outstanding class. Bruce Willis career launched after being on the show. I do remember the episode you referred to and remember not truly understanding it until later when I did read more Shakespeare. Thanks much for reading and hoped you enjoyed it. posted by: PirateGirl (reply) post date: 02.17.08 (11:16 am) Great post as always OS! I forgot about Greatest American Hero - one of my brother's faves! - and of course Moonlighting - I was dissapointed when that went off the air. :/ |
